Mary Roach

In 2013 I started post secondary education at Alberta College of Art + Design (now AUarts) and fell in love with ceramics. I spent my time in university exploring functional and tactile arts in conjunction with design and narrative illustration. In 2019 I graduated with a Bachelor of Design in Illustration.

In February 2020 I started making ceramic pieces at the Edmonton studio The Shop Arts + Ceramics and I haven't stopped.

When I'm not in my studio I spend my time enjoying local coffee and beer, and caring for my houseplants. No cream, no sugar.

My Work

My ceramic pieces are focused on the combination of ancient material and modern imagery. I draw on Inuit art, local environment, and punk culture for my work. I developed a distinct visual style with aggressive, solid forms inspired by the history of indigenous prints, editorial illustration, and political graphic design. My subjects range from local scavengers and plant life, to classic tattoo motifs.

Each pot is hand-pinched which leaves visible fingerprints and variations in their surface. I love this process because it creates a visible and tactile reminder that they are made by hand. 🖤
